Story Behind Parivartini Ekadashi
It is said that Lord Krishna had narrated to Arjuna the reason behind fasting on the occasion of Parivartini Ekadashi. King Bali is said to have ruled in the Treta Yuga, according to legend. He was a demon and despite this, he was a very kind and honest person, who dedicated himself to the betterment of the public. Devraj Indra was replaced by King Bali in heaven as a result of his good governance and devotion. During the time of King Bali, Devraj Indra along with the other gods were terrified. Consequently, all the deities prayed to Lord Vishnu for protection. To protect the Gods, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana and went to King Bali. It was there he requested King Bali donate him three steps of land. King Bali accepted the desired request of God.
Lord Vishnu’s Avatar, Vamana turned himself into a giant form as soon as his wish was accepted. As a result of this, he measured the two worlds in his two giant steps and was left with no space to put his third step forward. Seeing this, King Bali bowed down to him and asked him to put the 3rd step on his head. Seeing the king’s kind heart and devotion, Lord Vishnu was pleased and eventually blessed him to become the King of hell. Thus, this day marks the Ekadashi Vrat. Additionally, a sleeping Lord Vishnu’s Idol is kept forever with King Bali.
