The story of Margashirsha Purnima revolves around King Mahabhisha and his wife, Queen Satyavati. According to mythology, Queen Satyavati was cursed, due to which she turned into a river and remained waterless for a thousand years. She observed severe penance and pleased Lord Vishnu, who appeared before her, in order to break the curse. Lord Vishnu blessed her and promised that he would be in her waters on Margashirsha Purnima because of her devotion.
