Kaal Bhairav Ashtami: Dates, Significance and Puja Vidhi

13 Mar, 2026 by Dikshika

In Hinduism, the deity Kaal Bhairav is the fearsome, incensed, and fierce form of Lord Shiva, the destroyer. Kaal Bhairav Ashtami, also known as Bhairavashtmi, kalbhairav jayanti, Bhairava Jayanti, and Kalashtami, is observed every month on Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha.

On kaal bhairav ashtami, many people do fasting and pray to lord bhairava. It is mostly celebrated in North India in December-January and in South India in November-December. Kaal bhairav jayanti is the same as Kaal Bhairava Ashtami, where lord Shiva is manifested as Kaal Bhairava. It is widely celebrated in Kashi, focused on inner strength, devotion, prayers, and spiritual boundaries.

Kaal Bhairava Ashtami Significance

The word ‘Bhairava’ is made up of 'Bhr,' which means to bear or hold, and ‘Rava,’ which means self-awareness. The most popular story of Kaal Bhairava is mentioned in the Shiv Mahapuran. It is like once Lord Brahma went arrogant and egoistic and told Lord Vishnu that he is the supreme one.

Lord Brahma compared himself to Lord Shiva, as he can do whatever Lord Shiva can, so he should be worshipped, not Lord Shiva. To which, in return, Lord Shiva pulled a strand of their hair and threw it on the floor. From that strand, Kaal Bhairava emerged and chopped off the 5th head of Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma realized their mistake and asked for forgiveness. Then, Kaal Bhairava is cursed for doing brahman-hatya and wanders with the 5th head of Lord Brahma until he reaches Kashi. After he reaches it, he is released with all of his sins and stays thereafter, and becomes the protector of Kashi. He is locally known as ‘Kotwal of Kashi.'

One more story related to the origin of Kaal Bhairava is when Raja Daksha disrespects Lord Shiva in front of everyone, Maa Sati did not bear it and jumped into the Agni Kund. When Lord Shiva found out about this situation, he transformed into the Kaal Bhairava roop and cut off the head of Raja Daksha.

It is believed that worshipping the Kaal Bhairava form of Lord Shiva removes all the problems and obstacles from your life. It provides relief from diseases and fears. Kaal Bhairava represents the energy that has the power to destroy ego and fear and increase your boundaries. For these reasons, Kalabhairavashtami is said to be one of the most powerful ashtamis. Let us see what to do and how to perform pooja on Kaal Bhairav Ashtami.
