Indira Ekadashi 2026 Tithi

In Hindu religion, the Indira Ekadashi is considered among the most important Vrats. This Ekadashi is observed in the month of Pitra Paksha. According to the Gregorian calendar, this Ekadashi falls in September.

Significance Of Indira Ekadashi 2026

Out of all the 24 Ekadashis, Indira Ekadashi holds special importance. This Ekadashi is also known as Shradh Ekadashi since it falls in the Pitru Paksha. This Ekadashi holds great religious significance in the Hindu culture. It is believed that if an individual's ancestor’s afterlife is full of suffering then they tend to get liberation from all the pain and suffering that they have been dealing with. If their family members observe fast on this day, then the Yamraj forgive their forefathers for all the sins they have done. Moreover, our forefathers also attain Moksha by observing fast on the Indira Ekadashi. 

Observing fast on this day is considered equivalent to Ashwamedha Yajna.

Indira Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Mahishmati was ruled by a king named Indersena during the Satyug. His parents had passed away. He dreamed that his parents were in hell suffering extreme pain and suffering. The King became worried when he saw the plight of his forefathers. As he contemplated how to save them from hell's tortures, he devised a few ideas. Upon discussing the dream with his ministers and Brahmin scholars, some Brahmins advised him to perform the Indira Ekadashi fast with his wife. This will result in the salvation of the king’s forefathers. He further told the king that offering food and donations to Brahmins on this day would be a way to worship Lord Shaligram. Their blessings will guide his parents to heaven. 

The King and his wife observed a fast on the day of Indira Ekadashi by following the advice. During the same night when the King was sleeping, God appeared in his dreams and told him that his ancestors had attained salvation due to his fast. Thus, after this day, everyone observes the fast on Indira Ekadashi.

Indira Ekadashi 2026 Puja Vidhi

On the day of Indira Ekadashi, the family members should wake up early and wear neat clothes after taking a bath. After this, they must offer water to the Surya Devta. The Ekadashi fast is observed for 24 hours, starting from the Sunrise of Ekadashi and ending on the Dwadashi tithi. 

On this day, pray to the Shaligram form of God Vishnu. Further, on a cloth, make a Kumkum swastika and offer rice and flowers while chanting “Om Ganeshaya Namah” and bowing down to God. 

Place the picture of the Shaligram of Lord Vishnu in the temple and worship the God by offering Gangajal water to the God. After this, offer roli, and akshat. Perform the aarti by reading Vishnu Sahasranama. Conclude the Puja by listening to the Indira Ekadashi Vrat story, and breaking the fast with fruits and sattvic food.
