Significance of Dhanteras

The word Dhanteras originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Dhan’ meaning ‘wealth’ and ‘teras’ meaning 13th day. Dhanteras, also known as Dhanvantari Trayodashi or Dhanatrayodashi, is a festival celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha, in the Kartik month. Dhanteras marks the beginning of the 5-day long festival of lights, Diwali. People worship Lord Kubera, treasurer of the wealth, and Goddess Lakshmi, goddess of wealth.

The mythology says that Dhanvantari incarnates Vishnu. Upon emerging from the churning ocean, Dhanvantari held an urn full of nectar in his hand. As a result, utensils, gold, silver, and jewelry are traditionally purchased on the day of DhanTeras. Maa Lakshmi blessed her devotees with wealth and fortune on this day.

Once upon a time, there used to be a devotee of Lord Kubera, named Hema. He was the son of the sage Vasishtha. Hema lived a wealthy and prosperous life due to his immense devotion to the Lord. But, some celestial beings got jealous of his wealth and decided to test him. They reached out to King Balasur who was a demon and convinced him to create a war against Hema.

When Hema saw his kingdom in distress, he turned to his father, Sage Vasishtha, for guidance. As a result, he was advised to observe Dhanteras fast and worship Lord Kubera and Goddess Lakshmi out of devotion. As an assurance, he told Hema that their blessing would protect his kingdom and wealth. Following his father’s advice, Hema observed the fast on Dhanteras with utmost devotion and sincerity. Further, he performed the rituals by cleaning his kingdom and decorating it with flowers and diyas. He prayed to Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera. Seeing this devotion, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera became happy and appeared in front of Hema. Further, the Gods blessed him with an abundance of wealth and prosperity. Additionally, they assured Hema to safeguard his kingdom.
