Papmochani Ekadashi 2026 Date And Time

13 Jan, 2026 by Niharika

Here is all you may want to know about the fast of Papmochani Ekadashi, including its date and time in 2026, Vrat Puja Vidhi, and Katha.

The diverse and vibrant Hindu culture is home to many festivals, traditions, and rituals. Ekadashi is one of these auspicious days. This day, a favorite of Lord Vishnu, falls on the 11th day of Shukla and Krishna paksha of each month, according to the Hindu Panchang. Moreover, fasting on the Papmochani Ekadashi liberates devotees from their past and present sins.

Papmochani is a combination of two words Pap and Mochani. Here, Pap signifies sin, and Mochani means removal, hence the name Papmochani Ekadashi. Hence, as suggested by the Papmochani Ekadashi meaning, fasting on this day appeases Lord Vishnu and frees you from all grievances, sins, and mental afflictions. Moreover, it clears your thoughts and vision for a happy and peaceful life.

Since Papmochani Ekadashi's significance is immense, you must observe this fast with utmost devotion, following the full Vrat and Puja Vidhi. We share it all in this article, beginning with the date and time of this bright day and the Katha (story) behind it.

Date and Time of Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat 2026

The Papmochani Ekadashi falls between Holika Dahan and Chaitra Navratri, two major Hindu festivities. Moreover, it occurs on the eleventh day of the Chaitra month during the Krishna Paksha. Hence, as per the Hindu calendar, the Papmochani Ekadashi 2026 will be on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

However, observing a Vrat (fast) on this day does not reap its complete benefit, unless you know and recite the Vrat Katha, highlighting its significance.

Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Lomasa Rishi once narrated the Katha of this Ekadashi and its benefits to Emperor Mandhata. It goes like this.

Once upon a time, during ancient days, there was a sage called Medhavi. He was a keen Lord Shiva devotee, lived a life of penance, and used to meditate in the Chitraratha forest. The forest was frequented by Lord Indra and many apsaras. Everyone liked this place because of its scenic beauty and pleasing flowers.

When Lord Indra saw sage Medhavi meditating, he thought if the sage continued with this penance, he would get a high place in heaven. Thus, Lord Indra took distracting Medhavi from the meditation as a challenge. However, all his attempts went in vain.

Among the apsaras that accompanied Lord Indra to the forest, was an apsara called Manjughosha. She made numerous attempts to divert Medhavi’s attention. However, each of her attempts failed because of the sage’s powerful penance. Determined not to give up, she set up a hermitage a few miles away from Medhavi’s ashram and started living there.

Manjughosha began singing to captivate Medhavi with her melodious voice. Impressed by her beautiful singing, Lord Kamdev drew Medhavi’s attention toward Manjughosha by shooting an arrow of love with his magical and powerful bows. Lovestruck, Medhavi fell for Manjughosha’s beauty and charm.

He lost his penance and pure soul. After spending considerable time with Medhavi, Manjughosha lost interest in the sage and wanted to free herself. She asked Medhavi’s permission to leave. Then, the sage realized he was cheated and misguided and had lost his life of penance and meditation.

Angrily, he cursed Manjughosha to transform into a dreadful and ugly witch. After cursing her, he went to his father, Sage Chyavan’s ashram. Then, the sage Chyavan guided him to observe a Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat to release him from his sins. Medhavi and Manjughosha regretted their doings and observed the fast to seek forgiveness from Lord Vishnu. As a result, they were free from their sins.

You can live a sin-free and happy life if you listen to or recite the Katha above and observe the fast with complete Papmochani Ekadashi Puja Vidhi.
